CPE closed on the EP working days

by Gregor Prajs on 11/01/2013

Dear parents,

Due to a very unusual situation in 2013, we would like to warn you about the closure of CPE – Garderie and Study centre (Kirchberg and Mamer) on EP working days.
It will mostly effect families where both parents work in the EP, or single parents working for the EP or one parent working for the EP and the other for the private sector in Luxembourg or in another member state.

On the three days:

  1. Thursday, 28 March 2013 (Easter school holidays: 23 March to 7 April), the following day – 29 March being public holiday in Luxembourg (Good Friday), while 28 March is a working day in Luxembourg
  2. Thursday, 9 May 2013 – public holiday in Luxembourg (10 May is office closing day and school’ Pedagogical Day – no school for children) and
  3. Monday 20 May 2013 – public holiday in Luxembourg (Whit Sunday) coinciding with school holidays 18 to 26 May.

Crèche, rune by the EP, will be opened on those days to provide for parents of smallest children.

If your children are attending Garderie or Study Centre – the two will be closed, on the three days mentioned in the EP notice to parents with children in the Crèche.
The Commission decided there are not enough children whose both parents (or a single parent) are working – therefore it would be to expensive to have the Garderie and Study Centre opened (CPE5 will be opened only in the part rune by the EP – Crèche facilities).

In our view financial reason is quite weak, since the APCPE asked several times to permit access of children in Mamer to attend CPE on Kirchberg during school holidays, to reduce costs and to help children who usually use the school bus system (the busses don’t run during school holidays), but we were told this is not possible.
